My new piece The Tree in front of My House for Minneapolis-based band, Sprig of That is now out! Sprig of That commissioned eight composers to write a piece for them, and I’m so honored to be part of this awesome project! Please check out here about the project.
This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
Program Note: “I never owned a tree in my life until my family and I moved to Minnesota five years ago. Now I see “our” honey locust tree in front of our house everyday. It is a big old tree, has a hole where skittish baby squirrels were hiding in spring. Hundreds of cicadas climbed on it this summer, and different kinds of birds hang out on the tree all year long. I’m in awe to see it burst into vibrant green in spring and change to the beautiful color of yellow, orange, and red in the fall. Also the images of it’s intertwined roots connecting with other trees made me imagine how Ilan, Isabel, and Krissy communicate with each other musically. I wanted to capture the tree’s beauty, stillness, energy, and the power of connection in this piece.”
